Ultra Distance Cycling in Arkansas

Mt Magazine 200k Brevet

This is a beautiful but demanding route with a total of 6700 ft of climbing. The ride begins in Havana with a short warmup and then the 2000 ft climb of Mt. Magazine. A long descent and then pleasant ride to Mt. Nebo. The 1200 ft. climb is not as high but it is much steeper with constant switchbacks. Be prepared for a lot of standing in the saddle and probably some walking as well, no matter what gears you have, you will be wishing for more. The descent of Mt. Nebo can be as challenging as the climb, so descend with great care. Another long leg with some hills toward the end to reach Lake Nimrod. At this point, you are starting back to Havana, there is one short hill and then fairly flat riding. The several long flat stretchs are usually welcome with the climbing but there can be strong winds on the open road, with any luck they will be behind you.
